Study week Mathematics for Industry 2025
From 8 to 12 September 2025, the Belgian network BE-MATHS-IN on applied mathematics for industry and innovation, which gathers applied mathematical researchers at all Belgian universities, organizes its fourth Belgian study week “Mathematics for Industry”, which will be held at De Krook in Gent.
The Mathematics for Industry study week is an intensive problem-solving workshop that brings together young researchers, postdocs, scientists and industrialists. In the course of one week, small groups of researchers of different backgrounds will intensively brainstorm and work together to model and solve real-world challenges provided by industry. On Monday, each company representative presents their problem, after which the participants choose a problem to work on for the remainder of the week along with the industrial partner. On Friday morning, each group presents their solution to the chosen problem.
The study week warmly welcomes a broad scientific audience: from applied and computational sciences (applied mathematics, engineering, statistics, …) to pure sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, …).
Registrations for Mathematics for Industry 2025 are expected to open in March 2025.
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY WEEK
- Showcase the potential of mathematics to solve industrial problems
- Stimulate lasting R&D collaborations between academia and industry
- Enable academic partnerships between researchers of various backgrounds and fields of expertise
- Promote knowledge transfer from mathematics to industry
Why participate as researcher?
For researchers, taking part in the study week offers the following benefits:
- You are challenged by problems from the real world and get a flavor of what is important outside academia
- You get in contact with potential employers, both during group work as in several networking opportunities offered during the study week
- You experience working in and as a team, which is very different compared to working on your research topic as an individual
- By working in a team, you further develop interpersonal and communication skills
- By meeting and discussing with fellow researchers, new research ideas and collaborations may arise
Why participate as company?
As a company, you benefit from participating in the study week for the following reasons:
- You have access to state-of-the-art mathematical knowledge, techniques and ideas
- You gain new insights or receive confirmation of company insights through the mathematical analysis of your proposed problem by experts
- You can establish lasting and productive links with applied mathematical researchers
- You get in contact with and can evaluate potential new employees with a strong mathematical background
